Why do we do this every day?
As the summer draws to a close, it's back to work, back to school and for many, back to the nightmare of commuting, begging the question for those stuck in commuter chaos "why do we do this every day?" But as technology, attitudes and working practices change, working from home is becoming an increasingly viable option for many people. In fact there is more to working from home than just convenience and lifestyle improvements, there can be huge benefits across a broad spectrum of time, temper and pocket too, all with the added environmental bonus of not travelling. Finding space to work from home can be easier than you think.
A problem that can face some home workers is keeping home and work separate, especially if they are trying to use a spare bedroom or a corner of a kitchen or lounge to work from. There can be restrictions on space as well as intrusion from the rest of family life, but there is a solution that offers quality office space, as near as the back garden. A specialist manufacturer of garden offices, The Garden Escape has created a range of high quality buildings, with a very high specification to provide an excellent, well insulated work space just yards from home.
There have been recent calls from Parliament encouraging home working, to ease congestion, take some of the strain out of the transport system and burden on the environment by reducing commuter journeys. For mothers with young children there are obvious benefits. University lecturer and PR consultant Sarah Williams who works from a Garden Escape explains: "I have split my working week between the campus and home for some time now, even before the arrival of my second child. Having a separate office in the garden has meant that I don't have to take up a bedroom with work, and the boys can still have a room each and I don't have to jostle for position with toys on the kitchen table. Another benefit is that I can work while my son is playing in the garden and keep an eye on him. I've also explained to him that when Mummy's in the office she's at work and shouldn't be disturbed unless it's really important. It's a clearly defined space that he understands and a rule that he amazingly sticks to."
Garden Escapes are architecturally designed and constructed to a very high standard with sound and thermal insulation equivalent to a new build home. Usually without need of planning permission, they are professionally installed, hooked up to mains services and handed over, all ready to move into. For some, the biggest decision is where in the garden to put it. With sizes available from 2.5m square, ideal for one person up to a whopping 5 x 3 metres, big enough for several people with desks and equipment, Garden Escapes can be tailor made to offer windows and doors where you want them. Bathrooms can also be added to the building, to make them completely stand-alone as a work space, ideal for visitors or colleagues.
Kath Harvey from The Garden Escape explains "Our garden offices are being used by an astonishing variety of professionals, some are working exclusively from home, some are splitting their time between home and an office, but however they work, it appears to be working. Our construction team are very busy, especially around London, where the unbearable summer heat on buses, trains and the tube seems to have been a deciding factor in people taking the plunge into working at home."
